INFANT (0 to Toddling)
The Infant's World of ......
Our Infant Room Focus
Though an infant is small, they are capable of emotion, intelligence, compassion and developed social interaction. Providing a small and intimate environment helps to develop the building blocks of trust and security for the infant. Our professional and well trained caregivers offer a loving, calm and nurturing setting and understand it is important that the infant's needs are met promptly. Teachers operate with a "schedule on demand" where the child's needs are met individually and efficiently, and the caregivers view themselves as extended family. It is through predictability and genuine caring that the infant will develop their trust and sense of security.

There is a classroom curriculum posted where parents can view our weekly focus on infant development. Some examples of specific curriculum introductions might be shapes, colors, animals, flowers, family, etc. The infant's daily activities always include rocking, singing songs, and having individual interaction on the floor with the caregivers. Teachers have direct conversations with each child during the course of the day for special bonding, social interaction and language development. A variety of creative activities will be offered during the week which will encourage and support growth and development physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally.

Our physical environment is inviting, home-like and conducive to safe exploration where toys are rotated out on a regular basis. We understand that visual stimulation as well as tactile exploration is important to each child'slearning experience. Trips outdoors give the children an opportunity to interact with nature and experience the changing climates. Finger painting, arranging tactile blocks, or pouring and sifting rice allows for sensory exploration. Rocking to Mozart & story-time stimulate cognitive awareness.

 What An Infant Needs
* A strong sense of security, belonging, value and acceptance.
* Acknowledgement of their feelings and perceptions.
* Freedom to explore who they are creatively and cognitively.
* Acknowledgement they are social, caring & compassionate individuals who deserve respect.

Meals are a Part of Growth & Development
All the infant's meals from birth to about 10 months must be provided by the families. This puts the parent in the driver's seat where they determine the brand and type of food given (i.e. low sodium, low sugar, organic, homemade, etc.). Our policy helps reduce confusion on the introduction of new foods and possible allergic reactions. As the infant moves closer to their first birthday, the Center provides table food, which facilitates a smooth transition into the toddler program where meals are provided by the Center.

Health & Safety Considerations
Our toys and equipment are sanitized at the end of each day (or during the day if necessary) to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all the children. It is important to remember that families and the Center must form a cooperative team which focuses on the well being of all the children enrolled. This may mean keeping a child at home if they are sick or not feeling good where extra TLC is necessary. The Serendipity staff is dedicated to wellness and quality care with a goal for a conscious community established between the teachers, children and families!

TODDLER (Toddling to 24 months)
The Toddlers World of ......
Our Classroom Focus
The toddler is bursting with energy and possesses abundant curiosity while moving through their world with no fear! Their language may be somewhat limited, but their knowledge of their surroundings far exceeds most adult's awareness. Communicating with each child individually during daily activities is extremely important, as each child learns classroom expectations while expanding their vocabulary at an amazing rate! Their language is now expanding their foundation for their personal community in the classroom.
At this stage, the child explores a sense of independence through play and experiential exploration. We believe in providing a developmentally appropriate balance between structure and the freedom for self- expression. Using the "Project Approach" and the "Reggio Philosophy" as our educational foundation, each child can learn about themselves and their world through a variety of learning experiences. They want to touch, pour, pound and move everything! Their environment must be safe while allowing them to explore their actions and consequences. Rotating toys and classroom equipment is essential to provide variety that can keep pace with their brain activity and curiosity.

Weekly curriculum plans are posted for families to view the learning process within the classroom. Projects or themes help develop the basis that much of the learning springs forth from. Whether we are planting a garden, building a train village or cooking a special treat we can eat and play with, toddlers are using all of their senses as they learn and grow.
